Norwalk Islands Bird-Watching Cruise

Sun, salt air, and thriving coastal wildlife come together for a memorable birding experience on the water. The Norwalk Seaport Association’s guided tour offers a relaxed, up-close look at the rich bird life of the Norwalk Islands.

Departing from 90 Water Street in Norwalk, CT, the 45-foot Capt. M. C. Schlegel catamaran takes guests on a scenic 2.5-hour cruise through Long Island Sound. Along the way, you’ll safely observe nesting sites and colonies of ospreys, egrets, herons, American oystercatchers, terns, gulls, cormorants, and more. No two trips are the same—nature sets the agenda.

Each cruise is led by experienced birder James Leone, who brings deep knowledge of Connecticut’s coastal bird populations. With hundreds of species identified locally and over 1,200 worldwide, he guides guests in spotting birds while explaining their behavior, habitat, and role in the ecosystem.

A highlight of the trip is a pass by Sheffield Island, part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. The vessel’s design allows for excellent shoreline views, where you may see nesting gulls and a variety of wading birds in their natural habitat.
