Waldo's Back in Washington Depot This July!

Once again, in celebration of Waldo’s longevity and popularity, his American publisher, Candlewick Press, is teaming up with the American Booksellers Association and two hundred and fifty independent bookstores across the country for some hide-and-seek fun to encourage communities to patronize their local businesses.

Where’s Waldo?   In Washington Depot, of course!  Beginning on Tuesday 1st July, the iconic children’s book character in the red-and-white-striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting 19 local businesses throughout the community .  Find Waldo Local is a great summer vacation activity and a wonderful way to support local businesses and the Shop Local movement.

Anyone who wishes to join in the fun can pick up a “Find Waldo in Washington Depot” passport from any of the participating stores.  When you spot Waldo collect a store stamp or signature.  And to make things a little more challenging, Waldo’s magnifying glass will also be hiding in The Hickory Stick Bookshop.

Great prizes for participants who get 16 or more stamps in their passport. Completed passports should be handed in to the Hickory Stick Bookshop by no later than 5.00 pm on Thursday July 31st.

We will be having a celebration party from 3-4 pm on Saturday August 2nd. Check our website for further details!

The 43rd Annual Family Nature Day!

Our annual celebration of Mother Nature is a must for folks of all ages. This edition is chock full of the greatest presenters! Riverside Reptiles’ introduces you to some of Nature’s most underappreciated creatures. Come visit the many friends they’ll be bringing along. Learn all about North America’s only marsupial with Ferncroft Wildlife Rescue and their Opossum Ambassadors! Meet a wide variety of birds of prey with Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Center! Masters of the Sky visits us for the first time with free-flying birds of prey! Music will be provided by Rye Bred and Jennifer Vanderlyn. The day is filled with live animals, guided nature walks, information booths, tractor rides, goats, a POTION TABLE, and yummy food! The PIE SALE is extremely popular! Shop until you drop at the artisan market! Lots of nature crafts for the kiddies too! Who will be the winner of a trip for two to The Galapagos Islands (donated by Redfern Natural History) with Stewart McPherson and Gerri Griswold in April 2026 or use a $2000 gift card to AirBNB that can be used anywhere in the world! Paddle your favorite pond, lake, or river in a vintage 14’ Huron Canoe as our third prize winner! One lucky winner gets a $500 gift card to L.L. Bean as fourth prize! Cars for Kids Automobile Show

October 12, 2025 Rain Date: October 19, 2025

Supported by the Litchfield Hills Historical Automobile Club and the Valley Collector Car Club, the 12th Annual Cars for Kids Automobile Show will be held at CJR in Litchfield, 550 Goshen Road. 

Gates open for show cars at 8 AM. Entries are $10 per car. Dashboard plaques will be given to the first 100 paid registrants and exhibitor gift bags to the first 200 paid registrants. Judging will be from 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM and more than 20 trophies will be awarded at 2:30 PM. Spectator parking opens at 10 AM. Admission is $5 per car. 

Breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecued chicken sandwiches and hot and cold beverages will be sold. A scrumptious, signature bake sale will be conducted by the Litchfield Aid of CJR.

Children and families will enjoy farm tours and hay rides. Visitors may purchase eggs, chrysanthemums, and produce, including, pumpkins, gourds and squash grown by students, at CJR’s roadside Farm Market.  Products from other vocational classes, including culinary arts, woodshop, fine and creative arts, and power technology will also be featured.

Proceeds from this event will support CJR’s care, treatment and education services for children, youth and families in locations throughout the state.
