One Piano, Four Hands: Linda Bell & Maura May
Description
Norfolkâs own Linda Bell and Maura May, both talented musicians, will join forces on the library piano. Four-hand piano playing has a surprising cultural history. In the 19th century as pianos became more affordable, arrangements for four hands brought a large repertoire of music into the middle-class family home. This was before the advent of the phonograph, and the only way to hear new music, short of going to the concert hall, was to play it on the piano. Music publishers arranged symphonies, operas, and chamber music for four hands, and the piano became the centerpiece of domestic life. In addition, composers such as Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms wrote music for four hands.
