Basics of Online Security
Presented by Michael Jay of Personal Tech Support and State Trooper Vicki Donohoe. The near-universal adoption of personal technology has left many users with great unease about security threats. This entry-level, interactive presentation will discuss the basics of online security, and show real-world measures consumers can take to help reduce risks in their online world. We'll explain several of the most common threats faced by consumers – including the fact that your main concern should be: yourself.
We'll cover:
• Phishing emails and texts, and how to avoid those traps
• Malware, and the threats you're more likely to see (Hint: they're fake)
• Passwords, and why you should use a password manager
• 2-factor authentication: What it is, and how to use it properly
• Web searches, and why you need to be careful with any results
• Scams in the Apple App Store (!)
• Positive actions you can take: Data backups, system updates
• Why you should freeze your credit, and add "PINs" to your IRS account and phone #
• And why, if you are feel you are unlikely to ever address such factors, you should
reconsider having any substantial funds at risk via online banking...
This is an in-depth working session, co-hosted by a tech consultant and a representative of law enforcement. You'll see step-by-step instructions for actions you can take to help arm you against real-world scams. Please plan for a 90 minute Powerpoint presentation, followed by time for your questions for both presenters.
